London

London has produced some of the greatest engineering triumphs in history, from the first tunnel under the Thames, the building of the SS Great Eastern, and the world’s first true underground railway, to the more recent Shard and Thames Barrier.  London has produced numerous templates for other cities to follow. With new, high-profile engineering projects such as Crossrail continuing apace, London’s legacy of monumental engineering projects looks set to stretch into the future. But it is individual engineers themselves who will carry and develop this legacy. Big ideas start small, and it is possible for today’s inspired engineer to become tomorrow’s Brunel or Bazalgette.
